Glaucoma

Glaucoma

  • The eye is a structure that contains fluid. The fluid inside the eye gives the eye a typical amount of pressure. The eye nerve is harmed by the increase in eye pressure caused by a variety of factors (optic nerve). You have glaucoma. Glaucoma frequently manifests early on without any symptoms and is a silent disease. Rarely, symptoms like discomfort and redness may manifest. The quiet thief of vision is glaucoma. This will cause a gradual, painless loss of vision over time. Over the course of months and years, this loss of vision goes from the sides to the centre (i.e., side/peripheral vision is lost first).
  • It is important to keep in mind that eyesight lost to glaucoma cannot be recovered. So it is important that glaucoma is diagnosed during the early stages even before it causes any loss of vision. Glaucoma being a silent disorder, the early detection is possible only by routine eye examination.
  • Persons whom are prone to glaucoma are

    • People with minus or plus power in the eye

    • Diabetics

    • People with glaucoma patients in the family

    • History of eye trauma

  • Most often glaucoma occurs after the age of 40 years. But rarely glaucoma can occur in children and young people. Since glaucoma is more common after 40 years, everybody more than 40 years should have a yearly eye test done.
  • The intraocular pressure (IOP) test and computerised visual field analysis, which determines the amount of peripheral vision, are the two common glaucoma diagnostic procedures (HFA). Modern diagnostic tools including the Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), which can image and analyse the optic nerve with micron-level accuracy, are available at Uma Eye Clinic. Uma Eye Clinic brought the most modern OCT-angiovue (angiogram without injection of dye) to India. Even when all other tests are normal, it helps to detect glaucoma at an extremely early stage by imaging the blood flow to the optic nerve.
  • Treatment modalities for glaucoma are many. Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), a laser treatment works best for newly diagnosed glaucoma patients. It is a safe and painless procedure which does not require admission and after which the patient can immediately resume all routine activities. SLT can be safely repeated if required later.
  • Another latest laser treatment for glaucoma is the Cyclo G6 glaucoma laser which is very effective in controlling eye pressure.
  • Eye drops or operations can also be used to lower eye pressure in glaucoma. The main cause of eye drop therapy failure is a lifetime inability to apply the drops correctly according to dosage. Here, SLT beats out eye drops since it often only needs to be done once and has enduring results.
  • The glaucoma procedure is known as trabeculoplasty. The best outcomes have been achieved at the Uma Eye Clinic by the most skilled surgeons.
  • In summary, everyone with glaucoma and those over 40 years old must get an annual eye exam. Glaucoma is a silent thief of eyes, and the only way to stop it is through early detection, strict adherence to treatment, and routine follow-up examinations throughout your life.
